Our Plumas Elementary School Concept
Our philosophy for elementary school, known as Philosophy for Children, inspires young learners to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills through engaging discussions about philosophical questions. It empowers children to explore the ethical, aesthetic, political, and other dimensions of their experiences. Through the use of picture books, hands-on activities, and personal stories as discussion prompts, we create a safe and supportive environment where students feel encouraged to express their ideas and listen to one another.
Our Mascot: The Puma
In various spiritual traditions, the puma (or cougar, mountain lion) embodies strength, power, and a profound connection to the earth. It symbolizes courage, patience, and the graceful navigation of life, inspiring a sense of hope and positivity.
Revered as a good omen, the puma's spirit was sought by shamans for guidance in hunts and for prosperity. Many tribes honored its significance by forming cougar clans, celebrating its noble presence.
Our Color: The Californian Ocean Blue
The color of the sea is associated with depth, stability, trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, and intelligence. While the ocean is characterized by constant movement—tides, currents, and waves—beneath its surface lies a realm of unseen systems that are nurturing and stable.
Blue represents both the sky and the sea, symbolizing open spaces, freedom, imagination, and sensitivity. It embodies qualities such as sincerity, faith, and depth.
Sea Blue evokes strong emotions and symbolizes peace and introspection. It reflects the vastness of the ocean and the sky, representing exploration and contemplation.
